Will the eclipse be able to eclipse the World Cup?

On Sunday evening, at the exact moment when millions of soccer fans will set their sight on South Africa for the World Cup finale, an even more spectacular show will open for all of those lucky enough to be in the South Pacific at that time. From 20:15 to 22:52 CEST (18:15 to 20:52 GMT), a total solar eclipse will be visible from Cook Islands to the Southern tip of Chile, crossing over French Polynesia (Tahiti will be slightly north of the totality zone, which will cross right through the Tuamotu archipelago) and over Easter Island.

To follow this dramatic event on the Internet from the vast majority of the planet which will not be able to witness it directly, live streaming broadcasts are scheduled.

A Facebook event was created to list them.

Features

  • Soyuz in Guiana

This is the mythical rocket par excellence, the one that launched Sputnik, the first satellite and Gagarin, the first man in space. The CSG, Guiana Space Centre, is now one of its launch bases: a historic achievement.

  • Star Trek and NASA

The first episode of this famous science-fiction series was broadcast in September 1966. NASA has often made references to these programmes, as in the case of the space shuttle Enterprise, which had the same name as the spaceship in the series.

  • Alan Shepard, from suborbital to the Moon

50 years ago on 5 May 1961, a few weeks after Gagarin, American Alan Shepard reached space. Several years later, he was to walk on the Moon, summarising as it were the race in which the Soviet Union and the United States were competing.
