Georges Lemaître for ATV-5

The fifth European automatic cargo ship or ATV, Automated Transfer Vehicle, to the International Space Station is to be dubbed George Lemaître, after the Belgian physicist behind the theory of the Big-Bang. During his press conference at the beginning of the year, Jean-Jacques Dordain, Director General of the ESA, European Space Agency, stated that the fifth ATV would be the last one to be manufactured. Consequently, the names of the 5 ATV in launch order are: French writer Jules Verne (mission in 2008), German astronomer Johannes Kepler (mission in 2011), Italian physicist Edoardo Amaldi (launch scheduled on 9 March 2012), the American-Swiss (dual nationality) physicist born in Germany Albert Einstein (to be launched at the beginning of 2013) and the Belgian physicist George Lemaître.

Features

  • Soyuz in Guiana

This is the mythical rocket par excellence, the one that launched Sputnik, the first satellite and Gagarin, the first man in space. The CSG, Guiana Space Centre, is now one of its launch bases: a historic achievement.

  • Star Trek and NASA

The first episode of this famous science-fiction series was broadcast in September 1966. NASA has often made references to these programmes, as in the case of the space shuttle Enterprise, which had the same name as the spaceship in the series.

  • Alan Shepard, from suborbital to the Moon

50 years ago on 5 May 1961, a few weeks after Gagarin, American Alan Shepard reached space. Several years later, he was to walk on the Moon, summarising as it were the race in which the Soviet Union and the United States were competing.
