An Italian woman aboard the ISS

The European Space Agency has officially announced that its Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti is to take part in a 6-7 month-long mission aboard the International Space Station during 2014. Before her, her fellow countryman Luca Parmitano will blast off to the ISS at the end of May 2013 as a member of Expeditions 36 and 37. A year later, it will be the turn of German astronaut Alexander Gerst for Expeditions 40 and 41. And then, in November 2014, it will be Samantha Cristoforetti’s turn to take part in Expeditions 42 and 43. She will therefore be the first Italian woman to go into space.
We would reiterate that the mission of another European aboard the ISS, Dutchman André Kuipers, recently came to an end on 1 July (see this article).
