The Cape’s first rocket
On 24 July 1950, 60 years ago to the day, the American army launched a Bumper rocket, an American WAC Corporal rocket carried atop a modified German V-2. This was part of America’s attempt to master astronautical techniques. This eighth flight of a Bumper, which ended at an altitude of 16 km, was the first to be carried out from Florida’s Cap Canaveral site.
