Atlantis’ last blast-off
On 14 May 2010, space shuttle Atlantis blasted off towards Earth orbit for the last time as part of the STS-132 mission. However, when it returns to Earth, it is to be prepared for another blast-off! Atlantis is, in fact, to be the emergency space shuttle should Endeavour encounter a problem and not be able to return its crew safely to Earth during flight STS-134 scheduled for November 2010. There are those who are currently pressing for Atlantis, thus prepared, to lift-off anyway to the International Space Station one last time, following the return of STS-134, consequently adding STS-135 to the schedule (Russian Soyuz would then take on the role of emergency spaceships should they be required). However, numerous technical and budgetary obstacles remain.

Features

  • Soyuz in Guiana

This is the mythical rocket par excellence, the one that launched Sputnik, the first satellite and Gagarin, the first man in space. The CSG, Guiana Space Centre, is now one of its launch bases: a historic achievement.

  • Star Trek and NASA

The first episode of this famous science-fiction series was broadcast in September 1966. NASA has often made references to these programmes, as in the case of the space shuttle Enterprise, which had the same name as the spaceship in the series.

  • Alan Shepard, from suborbital to the Moon

50 years ago on 5 May 1961, a few weeks after Gagarin, American Alan Shepard reached space. Several years later, he was to walk on the Moon, summarising as it were the race in which the Soviet Union and the United States were competing.
